As a community, the best thing about us is that we work collaboratively across groups wherever and whenever we can. An example is our focus on the management of Himalayan balsam and other invasive species over the last few years with leadership and volunteers from local residents, Burley Parish Council, Walkers are Welcome Burley in Wharfedale and Wharfedale Wombles.
The joint mapping and audit work last year has identified the becks with the highest infestation and has guided our priorities. Neighbouring communities, such as Addingham and Ben Rhydding, reduced infestations through sustained effort — Addingham took 6 years and 300 man‑hours to see a visible difference!!
We need the same collective, long‑term commitment here in Burley, Burley Woodhead and Stead.
Spot & remove when walking:
If you see young balsam on public footpaths, take photos and a what3words location, and message us; most importantly, pull up the plants (Follow instructions in this Poster, but Do not access private land)
Your time makes the difference — help us protect our local environment.
Himalayan Balsam Management Project
