Burley Parish Council

As a council, we make all kinds of decisions on issues that affect the residents of Burley Probably the most common topics that we get involved with are planning matters (for which we are a statutory consultee), managing the Council run buildings, open spaces, and campaigning for and delivering better services and facilities for the village.

Local Councils (Parish and Town Councils) have limited powers to make decisions, but we do have the ability to negotiate with, and the power to influence, those other organisations that do make the final decisions, typically Bradford Metropolitan District Council. The organisations that make that final decision know that a Parish Council gives the best reflection of how a community feels about something and its views will be taken seriously

What we do in our Community

Here is a list of some of the really important functions that the Parish Council carries out:

  • The Parish Council sets the annual budget and precept charge for residents of the village, and it creates and maintains the Neighbourhood Plan.
  • The PC liaises with Bradford MDC on matters affecting the village such as transport, parking, police, roads, verges, trees, facilities, conservation areas, street furniture, youth services, etc.
  • Represent local views to Bradford Council with regards to requests for planning permission.
  • Plan and implement the distribution of public funds from the recent new housing developments.
  • We offer grants of up to £500 for local initiatives and activities in the village.
  • Manage and maintain the Queens Hall with over 30 events booked every week. Contact us to make a booking!
  • Manage, own, and hire out the Library, with over 2000 customers using our services each month.
  • Maintain the Village Green, Grange Park, Recreation Ground, Victoria Park, Burley House Field, Public Allotments, and other green spaces and verges. This includes the management and maintenance of the water feature, playground, the war memorial.
  • Maintain the public toilet at the Queens Hall.
  • Offer the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme to over 60 young people from across Wharfedale.
  • Maintain the Round House (recently refurbished) which is available for occasional hire. Contact us if you would like to hire the Roundhouse for your pop up or event.
  • We are the leading organization in the village seeking to establish a safe walking and cycle route (Wharfedale Greenway) from Otley to Burley. The Greenway is not intended as a cycle route yet but some of it is now maintained by the PC.
